What is the Via Verde?
It’s a device that will help save the most valuable thing – our time, because you don’t have to stop at toll booths, go to parking lots to look for a payment machine, and you can even use this device to pay at McDonald’s!

We’ll tell you:

Look for the nearest Via Verde center on the map. For us in Lisbon it was Loja Via Verde – Loja de Lisbon.

If you live, for example, in Almada, Caparica, the nearest one is: Via Verde – Loja de Almada

You arrive, take ticket A at the entrance, wait your turn – all information will be on the board.

Note that not all staff are English-speaking. This can be a problem, so we recommend you to have an interpreter on your phone beforehand.

Provide documents for your car, SEF document and your Portuguese bank card – it will be tied to the device, and all your expenses will be deducted from it.

Next, you will be asked to choose the class of tariff you need. The simplest one, which includes only the use of the highway, will cost 0.49 euros per month, which equals 5.75 euros per year. Personally, I have chosen the tariff “Mobilidade”. Its cost is 0,99 euros per month or 11,50 euros per year. This tariff is common, it allows you to pay for ferry services, gas stations, parking lots, ordering food and much more besides covering freeways. The list of services is constantly expanding.

All processing takes 10 minutes: you get an envelope containing the device itself and instructions on where to attach it.
If the device is defective or has stopped working, it will be replaced with a new one free of charge.

I managed to test it in the underground parking place: when entering the garage, I pressed the green Via Verde button (without getting a ticket), and on the way out the barrier went up automatically.
Very convenient!
